The most frequent diagnosis that we see with our pediatric patients include the following conditions:

    • Eczema
    • Acne
    • Warts
    • Bacterial Skin Infections
    • Diaper Dermatitis

So, following is information concerning those top two conditions to provide more understanding and insight

Pediatric Eczema – Overview

According to the National Eczema Society, eczema is a dry skin condition, and in mild cases, can also presents itself as scaly, red and itchy skin, and varies from person to person.

Studies at the National Eczema Association also estimate, that more than 31 million Americans suffer from eczema-related symptoms, and this uncomfortable condition, affects not only newborns and children, but adolescents and adults as well.

Childhood Eczema

In 2-12 year-olds, the condition usually presents itself a little differently than it does in newborns and babies. Now it is typically seen in the areas of the body that are able to flex, such as: the back, groin area, ankles, knees, elbow regions, inside of the armpits and on the neck.

The main thing about eczema is that it is generally very itchy (intensely itchy), so patients tend to be pretty uncomfortable overall. With itching attacks (flare-ups), the rash can become very red or even raw, and weepy.

Some basic guidelines when treating this condition is use very gentle, fragrance free, and unscented products for washing, and drying clothes. You would want to apply the same guidelines to soaps when washing your body and face.

For the persistent rash, we recommend scheduling an appointment at our Pediatric Dermatology Maryland clinic as there are a lot of different avenues for treatment, and one will be specifically prescribed for your child.

Generally, we start with a bit of a topical medication at first in less sever cases. If your child is still failing the treatment, then there are injectable medications which could be considered.

So, if you do notice any irritants on your child’s skin, we highly recommend seeing a local or nearby dermatologist as they can help with all types of ages, especially pediatric patients.

Newborn Eczema

At out Eastern Shore Dermatology practice, a high percentage of our patients with eczema are newborns, which can appear in babies within the first few weeks, and months after birth.

The condition can range anywhere from mild, moderate, to severe, and should be diagnosed and treated by a licensed practitioner, such as the doctors that we have at our Easton MD pediatric dermatology clinic.

While many factors can contribute to this inherited skin condition, it is good to be aware of some basic items and conditions that can cause allergic reactions.

First, there are many disinfectants, soaps, and perfumes that can worsen eczema in babies. Some products may cause an allergic reaction, such as bleach, dyes, detergents, dryer sheets, bubble bath, some shampoos as well as fabrics such as nylon, polyester, spandex and especially wool.

A quick note here is that new babies’ clothes should always be washed before being worn, and dye-free and fragrance-free detergents should always be used. Finally, for sensitive skin, always use or apply a good sunscreen as a barrier for the skin.

Lastly, be aware that this condition is also affected by the environment where high temperatures and humidity can cause flare-ups, and by certain pollens, and potentially animals and their dander. And if your home air is very dry, install a humidifier.

Pediatric Acne – Overview

There are multiple types of pediatric acne, and during different phases of a child’s life when pediatric acne, or prepubertal acne can occur. Acne in children can be divided into four groups according to the American Acne and Rosacea Society (AARS).

    • Neonatal Acne
    • Infantile Acne
    • Mid-Childhood Acne
    • Preadolescent Acne

There are increasing numbers of acne cases seen in younger age groups, which makes acne one of the most common skin conditions among children and adolescents. Children and adolescents can develop acne and acne-like conditions at a variety of ages, including newborns, infants, and young children.

The three main types of pediatric acne include mild, moderate and severe cases. Most children’s acne falls into the mild to moderate category.

Although acne is usually thought to be an exclusively teenage condition, especially among males in their postpubescent years, the condition can actually affect men and women of all ages.

A recent study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25597339/) estimates that acne affects 9.4% percent of the global population, making it the eighth most common disease! With the right treatment, you can manage the condition that can be both embarrassing and painful.

Also, children can develop acne and acne-like conditions may occur at different ages in childhood, such as in neonates, infants, and young children, sometimes as part of a more serious illness.

At our Easton MD clinic, we diagnose and provide solutions that are specific to each person because the treatment depends on the type of acne, the extension and its severity.

As a general rule, mild cases can be treated with topical treatments, while more severe cases may require oral treatment.
